We reject the use of glue, oil, solvents, and VOCs. Cut from a single maple tree then left pure.

Our philosophy
Americans suffer from a lack of wood. Seeing and touching wood has been shown to reduce stress, increase relaxation, and even support healing.
Yet wood has largely disappeared from our built environment- and when we do use it, we’re taught it needs stains, glue, oils, or coatings to be “finished.”
We believe wood needs less, not more. So we select it for quality and add nothing.
Salzmark started with a gift
My brother-in-law gave me a solid wood cutting board he made. I was mysteriously hooked. Eventually I understood why: it was one piece of wood, not strips glued together.
I began researching the history of cutting boards, the properties of wood, and how the material is processed today.
Salzmark is the result of that obsession, and a vehicle for the home goods I believe should exist.

Care
- Wash with mild soap
- Wet both sides of board when rinsing
- Do not soak or put in dishwasher
- Dry after use with air exposure on all sides: either leaning upright on the handle, or on a drying rack
Materials
American Sugar Maple. No other additives or ingredients used.
Does wood need oil?
No. Research into the history and science of cutting boards reveals that oiling cutting boards was not popular until the 1950s, and that wood may have better resistance to bacteria without oil.
Consistent air-drying ensures a long lifespan.
How will it age?
Without coatings that dry out in patches, the wood develops an 'aged' look rather than a 'used' look. This includes:
Color:
The wood will be light in color to start, and stains may show more easily at first. The wood will darken and become more uniform in color over time, and stains will not be as visible.
Texture:
Small hairline cracks (called "checking") may appear at the edges without affecting performance
Can I use both sides?
Yes, it's fully reversible. The logo appears on one side only.
